Chapter Seventeen
Team
I watched from the window as the ambulance carried Ruby away. She’d started coughing blood as we carried her off the helicopter. We had decent medical facilities at the mansion, but Kracker’s scanners revealed that one of her broken ribs had punctured her lung. Ruby would die if we didn’t get her help.
I wanted Clint to go as well. He had three broken ribs and a hairline fracture in his hip, but insisted he could handle the pain. I thought he was going to give me some lecture about how pain was all in the mind, but when Kracker offered him oxycodone tablets, he wolfed them down like they were Tic-Tacs.
As the ambulance disappeared down the driveway, I went back to the infirmary. Harry was sitting on his cot, his head cradled in his hands.
“You feeling any better now that you’ve taken those pills?” I asked.
He shook his head. “Didn’t take ‘em.”
“What? Why not?”
“You think that, out in the jungle, when an ape gets a beat down from another troop, he can just pop a few pills?”
“Port City’s not a jungle,” I said.
“Isn’t it?” he asked. He started to unbutton his vest. He tossed it onto the floor, then pulled off his shorts, including his underwear. I couldn’t help but stare as he stood before me.
“What?” he said.
“I’ve never seen you completely naked. At least, not from the front.”
“Get used to it. I’m never putting on that costume again.”
“That costume saved your life,” I said. “The vest saved you from a broken spine or worse.”
“If it weren’t for that damn tail, One Hit couldn’t have grabbed me.”
“I thought you liked your tail.”
“It’s a tool,” he said. “Humans are dependent upon tools. I’m sick of pretending to be human.”
“I’m sure they can redesign your costume without the tail.”
He shook his head. “No more clothes. Why should I wear clothes? I have fur.”
“Um… so the world can’t see your junk?” I forced myself to look at his face instead of his crotch.
“What little of it there is,” he said, sounding bitter.
When we’d wrestled at the Butterfly House, I’d felt how big his testicles were. But I was surprised to discover that his penis was invisible beneath the long thick fur that covered his belly.
“None of the great apes have large penises,” he said. “Aside from my nose, you’d never know I had any human DNA.”
“You’ve got a human brain. You can talk.”
“Well, I don’t want to talk now,” he said rubbing his temples. “My brain feels like it’s been run through a blender.”
“All the more reason to take the pills.”
“Forget it. Medicine’s for people. I’m going to heal the natural way and sleep this off.”
“In a tree?” I asked, teasingly.
“Fuck you,” he growled, dropping down on all fours.
“It’s just a joke.”
He shuffled away without speaking to me or even looking back.
The house was weirdly empty when I woke the next afternoon. Kracker wasn’t in front of his computer, Clint was no longer in the infirmary, and Harry wasn’t in his bedroom.
I went to the kitchen and made myself some coffee.
